February 22nd, 2009TechnologyAny computer that is hooked to the Internet needs some good anti spyware program. There are lots of sites out there that contain these annoying programs that install on your computer and cause all sorts of annoying problems. Like anything else some of the removal tools on the market are better then others. Were going to take a look at how you can keep spyware off your computer.
Is Your Spyware Removal Software Any Good?
One of the biggest problems with finding some spyware removal program is making sure that it is not spyware itself. There are many programs on the market that install on your computer and pretend to scan your computer. Scans like these pop up on your computer to tell you that you have spware and then it will tell you that it can get rid of it for you. The catch is that you will need to buy their software. They will often give you a form to fill out so they can get your personal information and credit card number. These scans will often keep happening over and over again and slow your computer down. What makes this even worse is that software like this can not even be removed.
Avoiding Spyware
If you want to avoid spyware then you need to be careful to what sites you actually visit. The biggest problem most people will run into is porn sites, but even downloading pirated software and music can create lots of problems. The good news is that most normal sites are safe. Some sites may install some cookies or other harmless things. In fact, cookies can be very useful for the right sites.
Educating Your Children
Children and teenagers can get you into allot of trouble. Watch what sites your kids visit and you may want to consider blocking certain ones. You can purchase some security software that will allow for you to do these things. Set up different accounts on your computer for your children. Do not give them permission to install anything on your computer. This can save you lots of time and trouble.
Perform Regular Scans
You can set your computer to scan for spyware and viruses every day. I have my computer scan for both of these things at night while everyone is sleeping. Regular scans like I recommend will keep your computer much more safe. Be sure that you purchase software that will take care of these sort of things.

December 25th, 2008TechnologyAccording to most PC magazines 80% of all computers have spyware on them. It's not all bad news, Many of these programs are very inisent. That means the vast majority of these programs really do nothing to harm your computer. In fact many of these programs such as games come installed on PCs right from the store.
You still need to make sure you are not infected. Most free virus scanners do nothing to stop spyware. Most free scanners do very little to protect your computer. Read a bit more about some popular threats at on this Remove Virtumonde site or this Trojan Vundo site. Both sites provide some good detail on spyware and how it affects your computer.
You can still scan your PC for free using many free trial programs out there. I’m not talking about using a junk client. Check out the sites highlighted above for a free trial of Spyware Doctor. This is the main tool we use to repair peoples commputers when they are infected with Spyware. This program is on the top of every computer magazines list. While the program does cost money you can get a free 30 day trial. You really only need one day because the first scan will let you know if you have infections or not. If not then don’t worry about it. If you are infected with spyware then you need to take action.
Once the scan is done there is a metter in most programs that will tell you the threat level. If you see a cookie as an infection and chances are you will don’t worry about it. These are harmless little traces that do nothing.
Another good resource is this vundo

site. The blog is mostely about Vundo but does describe how many spyware aplications work. Remember do not purchase any spyware software or virus software without getting some feedback on it. The other thing to remember is no free client on the market provides enough protection. Most of these programs do not give you protection. It’s only after you have been infected that they kick in and by then it’s often too late. -
December 7th, 2008TechnologyAt some point and time you will need computer help. It might be a virus you just can not remove yourself or your computer might be slower then a snail.
I do computer repair for a living and service a local market in Northern Colorado. The number one issue we get called out for is spyware and viruses. This is our bread and butter. On average the cost runs around 178 for onsite service. The next most popular service we perform is a system tune-up. This runs 129.
When calling ask about any specials they may be running. I run a small computer repair shop. Many people like that because if they have an issue they can ask for me by name. Becuase bix box stores have so many employees that multiple people work on your computer. This can often times lead to something being missed.
You are not forced to have someone on site to repair your computer. Thanks to new technology many companies now do online computer repair. Places like http://www.onlinecomputerrepair.org specialize in remote computer repair for XP and Vista. This is a great way to get your computer repaired right away and with out paying those higher prices for an in home tech. This sure beats hauling your computer across town and waiting a week for it to get fixed. This price is less online because no one needs to come out and the technician can multitask and get more done. This really helps to lower the prices.
When selecting a company regardless of what way you go, you should always ask for the prices up front. There is nothing worse then hearing they charge 100 bucks an hour and you end up with a 400 dollar bill. Many places now charge by the service. Ask about the prices right away and get an estimate on the repair.
You should also check and ensure the company offers some kind of guarantee. For instance my small computer repair company has a 30 day guarantee on all services and a 90 day guarantee on workmanship. This means that if the spyware or virus comes back we will not charge them again for removal. It’s rare but when it comes to spyware sometimes a threat is not detected until a few days after the removal.
Bottom line, ask questions until you are happy with what you hear.
