January 24th, 2009TechnologyThere are seven million subscribers who enjoy Sky Television in their multitude of services: they have it all from great documentaries, movies, shows and cultural events to news, sports and interactive features at a high video and sound quality. Rupert Murdoch founded the four channels of Sky Television in 1989, but it merged with its competitor British Satellite Broadcasting in 1990 and it became British Sky Broadcasting. Even after the merge, the company was still in serious financial trouble with millions of pounds being lost every week. The management reorientation and the creation of a subscriber base allowed for the gradual recovery of the losses and even the making of profit in the following years. The new Sky Television became a success.
Sky Television is the most important subscription-based TV service provider in the UK that enters around ten million of British and Irish homes. The headquarters of the company are in Osterley, London, with the uplink with a direct connection to the satellite located just outside Southampton; yet, most of the Sky Television departments are concentrated in Livingston and Dunfermline, Scotland. Changes came over the years with modifications not only of the departments but of the packages offered to the consumers too.
The user gets access to the channels broadcast by Sky Television by means of the Sky digibox with or without personal video recorder included. If you choose the complex set, then it would be like having your own TV channel to enjoy freely. One other great option promoted by Sky Television in order to increase the number of customers is the use of interactive TV services, thus viewers could even choose what cameras to have access to during sports events for instance. Besides the subscription-based services, Sky Television also broadcasts around 160 free to access radio and TV channels via satellite.
The For standard packages, a Sky Television subscriber has to pay somewhere between £16 and £21 per month without the premium option. The variation depends on the programming and combinations that the users select. More advanced options cover Sky World, Sky Movies and Sky Sports, but such a Sky Television package costs £45. The technical requirements are not difficult to meet: the satellite system has to be pointed in a certain direction that the satellite technician will take care of, and the system needs to include a Sky box with an active viewing card. Furthermore, the company also requires that you have a credit card, whether Visa, Mastercard or Eurocard.
