I’ve just returned from another of my occasional test drives courtesy of my buddy over at Nationwide Vehicle Contracts. This week he took me out in a Subaru Tribeca - currently available on a car leasing contract for £179.95 per month, plus VAT of course.

This four wheel drive car would set you back something in the region of £30,000 if you bought one outright. On the plus side, it has some excellent safety features, including child seat mounting points, curtain airbags and stability control. Its also a highly secure 4WD with deadlocks and an engine immobiliser.

On the negative side I did find the ride to be a little lumpy on uneven road surfaces, but this improved on the open road. The suspension appeared to be quite noisy on particularly uneven roads so I’d be interested to see how it behaved off road.

All in all the Subaru Tribeca looks like an ideal large family car for those who need a lot of passenger space for long drives into Europe or holidays in the highlands. It feels like a very sturdy, robust vehicle that should comfortably withstand the day to day wear and tear of a busy family car.

Having a friend who works for a car leasing firm is definitely well-cool. Whenever he gets a new model in the showroom he gives me a call and I get to come along for a little test drive. Brilliant.

His latest and greatest leasing offer is on the fantastic Lexus IS 4-door saloon which could be yours for  measly £249.95 per month, plus VAT. To buy outright this beast of a car could cost you as much as £50K, with all the bells and whistles.

We went for a spin in the Lexus and I was enormously impressed. It’s not really a car for me as I don’t think it would suit my regular runs to our local tip laden with garden waster. This car is definitely in the executive class with great handling, top quality interior and fantastic security and safety features.

So if you are looking for a practical little runabout this probably isn’t for you. But if you are looking for a well equipped, safe and secure executive class saloon I’d recommend taking a ride in a Lexus IS.

Business fleet managers have enjoyed the benefits of leasing their commercial vehicles for a long time. But now, many sole traders are taking advantage of some outstanding van leasing and contract hire deals and, for many, these are making the difference between staying in business and going under.

The benefits to business of leasing over outright purchase are well known. Importantly, for the small business person, the fixed, known monthly payments enable them to forecast their monthly expenditure accurately. Also, the initial payments are much less than is often expected when buying a van or commercial vehicle using a bank loan.

Van leasing contracts can include all maintenance costs and often will include road tax and other optional extras such as breakdown rescue and even replacement vehicles in the event of a problem.

Mr Saunders, a self employed carpenter, said:

“I desperately needed a new van but my cash flow was bad due to some customers not paying up on time. I thought I’d have to stop trading but then I found out about the advantages of leasing over buying and now I have a brand new Mercedes Sprinter on an affordable van leasing contract. It has truly saved my business.”

As well as the clear cash flow advantages leasing also brings a number of tax benefits which can be beneficial to the sole trader, particularly if they are registered for VAT.

So, before you go and take out another bank loan for a second hand van on outright purchase, do yourself and your business a favour and check out the latest van leasing deals. You will be pleasantly surprised to find what you can get for your money.
